fingertips yuzu-stained paper-thin
cheery citrus, their physical comedy
with the dumb joy of being fruit
in a drying shed with 1976 dial-tone air

fluorescents making even the lemon look holy
buzzing hues a sour commercial jingle
half-memorized, soft as chalk
on the orange wood listening
as the shapes symphonize back in prickly violins

lets all envy their ancient formulas
while the fruits rest under their own weight
of being wanted for the wrong reasons
which is the only way anything
is ever wanted at all.
